In AutoCAD, a layer is a logical grouping of objects such as lines, polylines, arcs, circles, text, dimensions, hatches, images, and blocks based on visual characteristics such as color, line type, line weight, and object visibility.

Each layer can be turned on or off, locked or unlocked, made to display or not display based on specific conditions applied within AutoCAD, and assigned other visual characteristics such as transparency or plot style table color mapping.
