What Does the Course Actually Cover?

NY defensive driving courses follow a state-mandated curriculum split into eight chapters. Topics include:

• New York traffic laws — updated rules around speed limits, right-of-way, and distracted driving

• Adverse weather driving — stopping distances, visibility, and vehicle control in rain, snow, and ice

What to Expect: How the Process Works

Step 1: Register online. The entire course is online. No classroom, no scheduling around a school's hours.

Step 2: Complete the course within 30 days. The course takes a minimum of six hours — page timers are built in and can't be bypassed. Most people finish in one or two sittings. Progress saves automatically so you can pick up where you left off.

Step 3: Pass your chapter quizzes. There's no final exam. Just the short quiz at the end of each chapter, with multiple attempts allowed if you need them.

Step 4: Get your certificate. Once you finish, your certificate is issued same-day (if you complete before 4 PM ET). Many providers also report your completion directly to the NY DMV — no extra paperwork on your end.

Step 5: Notify your insurer. Submit your certificate to your insurance company within 90 days of completing the course to activate your discount.

How NY Driving Points Work (and Why PIRP Helps)

New York tracks violations using a point system. Every moving violation adds points to your license — speeding 1–10 mph over the limit is 3 points, for example. Hit 11 points within 18 months and you're at risk of suspension.
