Comprehensive VS Collision Insurance

Both of these start with a ‘c,’ both are types of insurance and you usually have both on your automobile. But do you know the difference between comprehensive vs collision coverage?

Basically, comprehensive coverage is a policy that covers damages to your car caused by things outside your control, such as natural disasters, fire, robbery and theft.

Comprehensive VS Collision Insurance

Here are a few examples of accidents that would be covered under your comprehensive insurance:

  • Debris that flies out from under your lawnmower and chips your car window.
  • A ladder falls onto your car while you’re painting the outside of your house.
  • Instead of using your ice scraper on your windshield, you use hot water to melt the ice and your windshield cracks.

Collision coverage then covers damages to your car because of a car accident that you cause.

Some examples of accidents that would be covered by your collision insurance include:

  • Running over a child’s bicycle in the driveway or on the sidewalk.
  • Underestimating the height or width of a drive-thru.
  • Scratching the top of your car after driving under low hanging tree branches.

If your car is worth more than $4,000, it is important to purchase collision coverage.

In terms of comprehensive coverage, the The Car Insurance Guide says it’s “in a stressful time – after a natural disaster, or an act of vandalism – it can be extremely helpful if the financial burden of paying for car repairs is already taken care of.”
