When we buy a new or used vehicle, the first thing we wish for is that it will last forever, but harsh reality is that vehicles are just like humans, and have to break down at some point in time. However, there are a few things you can do to reduce the chances of repairs and mishaps and extend the life of your vehicle. Listed below are basic yet important tips that apply to all types of vehicles and models.
1.The first thing to keep in mind and one that many car owners ignore is the owner’s manual. This book is comes complimentary to the vehicle and is located in the glove box for easy access. Everything from oil maintenance to changing your brakes is listed in the book, and must be followed religiously. Errors as a result of not following the book are inexcusable especially for late model vehicles. The gauge cluster of the vehicle can only tell you so much and since it is a physical computerized component of your vehicle is prone to malfunctioning so it is not something to depend upon completely.
2.Checking the fluid and pressure of your vehicle regularly is crucial to the overall functionality and well being of the vehicle. Good news is that you don’t need to visit the garage to have this looked at, but can be done by yourself and doesn’t take more than ten minutes. All you need to get started is a rag and a cool engine. Simply find the oil tank in the hood, remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert and check the oil level through the labeled indicators. While you’re at it, you can also check out the steering fluid level and belts and hoses to see if they’re intact and signs of wear and tear. Ideally, this routine checkup should be performed once a week or a few days before going on a road trip so that if there are any issues, they can be fixed well in advance.
3.Take it easy when starting the vehicle. There are many driver’s that start up their vehicle and immediately hit the gas pedal, which is definitely a bad and damaging practice. Some say it helps the car warm up, but the fact is that even if a car engine is completely cooled down, it takes hardly a minute after startup for the oil lube the engines without using the gas pedal.
4.Odd noises upon startup or even when driving is never a good sign and hence needs to be checked immediately. However, most noises occur while driving such as a clicking sound that could simply mean a nail or gravel stuck in the tires. If you hear a loud squealing sound, it’s probably your brakes that require attention and again usually occurs when the vehicle is in motion. If you cannot figure out the problem, take your vehicle into a dealership or certified car repair shop for a more informed opinion.
5.Drive your car calmly and do not apply pressure to the brakes or the gas pedal. You can however apply full throttle once in a while, but being consistent will lead to expedited wear and tear. While shifting gears, ensure that vehicle has come to a complete stop before switching into reverse, which will put less stress on the transmission.
When followed, the simple tips above are a great way to pamper your vehicle and keep it running comfortably for years to come.
