Its time to brush up traffic rules, new Motor Vehicles Act on its way

Its seem like this time Union Government is paying extra attention to road safety and its policies. The amended Motor Vehicle Act is in the final stages of approval at the Rajya Sabha, the Lok Sabha has already passed the act and will bring updates to laws that have remained largely unchanged since 1988.

This act is especially important when you see how rapidly the numbers of vehicles on our roads have increased, and our horrific road safety record. In the new Motor Vehicles Act, much higher penalties for driving offences are expected. Driving without a license, breaking speed limits, not wearing seatbelts, caught using a phone or rash driving and drunk driving may claim much higher fine from the drivers.

The amendments in the Bill will mainly focus on issues relating to improving road safety, citizens’ facilitation while dealing with the transport department, strengthening rural transport, last mile connectivity and public transport, automation and computerization and enabling online services.
