Do you need to have a licence reposess cars in NY State?

In New York State, a license is required to repossess cars. The license is issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and is valid for two years. To obtain a repossession license, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

- Be at least 18 years of age

- Be a citizen of the United States or a lawful permanent resident

- Have a valid driver's license

- Have no criminal convictions for felonies or misdemeanors involving moral turpitude

- Have a good credit history

- Have a surety bond in the amount of $25,000

In addition to these requirements, applicants must also pass a written exam and a background investigation. The written exam covers topics such as the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, the New York State Personal Property Law, and the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. The background investigation includes a check of the applicant's criminal history, credit history, and driving record.

Once an applicant has met all of the requirements and passed the written exam and background investigation, they will be issued a repossession license. The license is valid for two years and must be renewed every two years.

It is important to note that repossession is a highly regulated industry and there are many laws that govern the repossession process. Repossession agents must adhere to these laws and regulations or they could face civil or criminal penalties.
