Process to Register a Leased Car in NJ
1. Fill out the Motor Vehicle Services Registration Form (Form MV-1). Provide your personal information, vehicle information, and insurance details.
2. Obtain the Certificate of Title for Leased Vehicles (Form MV-4) from the lessor. This document must be signed by both the lessor and the lessee.
3. Make a copy of your lease agreement. The copy must be clear and legible.
4. Provide proof of insurance. Your insurance policy must meet New Jersey's minimum insurance requirements.
5. Present your driver's license or state-issued photo ID.
6. Pay the registration fee and any other applicable fees. The registration fee is $50 for a standard passenger vehicle.
7. Submit all of the required documents to the nearest MVC office.
The MVC will process your registration application and issue you a new registration certificate and license plate(s). You must place the registration certificate and license plate(s) on your vehicle.
Tips for Registering a Leased Car in NJ
- Start the registration process early, as it can take several weeks to complete.
- If you are registering a vehicle that is new to New Jersey, you will also need to bring a completed Motor Vehicle Inspection (Form MV-38) to the MVC office.
- If you have outstanding parking tickets or other vehicle-related fines, you will not be able to register your vehicle until you pay these fees.
