Having to deal with an expensive auto repair bill out of the blue is extremely stressful – but unfortunately, many of us have been through it. Maybe your vehicle is older, or maybe your warranty JUST expired; no matter what the situation, figuring out how to pay hundreds or even thousands to get your vehicle back on the road is not easy.

According to a recent article from Ask the Money Coach, there are a few things you can try to come up with a way to pay for your expensive, but necessary auto repairs.

• Negotiate with the mechanic or ask about sales, discounts, specials, coupons or payment plans.
• Shop around if possible. Get other estimates and quotes and go with the lowest.
• Barter with someone who can do the job for you. Do you have a mechanic in the neighborhood or someone who is handy with vehicles? See if you can offer a trade of some sort for their help and get off cheaper.
• Get a personal loan from a family member or friend and set up a payment plan to make sure they get their money back.
• Use a credit card – just beware of the interest rates and additional charges you’ll face.
• Sell personal items for some quick cash. Online sites or pawn shops are common ways to get some quick cash and pay for those repairs.
