Tools and Materials Needed
- Vehicle ramps
- Jack stands
- Bungee cords
- 13 mm wrench
- Ratcheting wrench and socket
- Medium breaker bar
- Rubber mallet
Procedure:
1. Vehicle preparation
- Set the parking brake and chock the wheels.
2. Front Bed support preparation:
- Unbolt and remove the front bed brackets supporting the bed. Use the 13mm wrench to loosen and remove the bolts. If the bolts don't come off easily, use a penetrating agent like WD-40. Repeat the process on the other side.
3. Raise and support the truck:
- Position vehicle ramps slightly wider than the truck's wheelbase for added stability. Drive onto the ramps with the rear wheels. Set the parking brake and engage gear or put the vehicle in 'Park' mode (for automatic transmission). Place jack stands under the truck's frame for additional support.
4. Support the bed:
- Use bungee cords to carefully support the bed from beneath. Make sure they're secure to avoid any accidents. These prevent the bed from suddenly dropping to the ground.
5. Disconnect fuel and electrical connections
- Disconnect the fuel line connections under the bed. These might require a ratcheting wrench and socket. Additionally, detach any electrical connections or harnesses you find. Be cautious not to break any wires.
6. Remove bed-to-frame bolts
- Use a ratcheting wrench to remove the bolts securing the bed to the truck frame. It might be helpful to use a medium breaker bar if the bolts are tight. Repeat this step on all four corners of the bed.
7. Lower and remove bed:
- Gradually lower the jack supporting the truck until there is enough space to slide the bed out.
Use a rubber mallet to gently pry between the bed and the truck frame to loosen the contact. Ask your helper to guide and control the bed's descent while you keep removing bolts.
8. Remove the tailgate
- Lift up the tailgate and set it aside. It might be helpful to have someone assist you in lifting the tailgate.
9. Clean the bed and Frame:
- Once the bed is removed, take the opportunity to clean the truck frame and inspect for any damage or rust. Clean the bed as well.
10. Reassemble the bed:
- To reinstall the bed, follow the steps in reverse order. First, place it on the frame and insert the bolts, aligning all brackets. Then, connect any electrical or fuel connections and finally, install the tailgate.
