You do not need a license to drive an e-bike in Ontario, but there are some restrictions you should be aware of.
To operate an e-bike in Ontario, you must be at least 16 years old.
You must wear a helmet that meets the standards set out in Ontario's Highway Traffic Act.
Your e-bike must be equipped with the following:
- Two brakes
- A headlight and taillight
- Reflectors on the front, rear, and sides
- A bell or other warning device
You cannot operate an e-bike:
On a sidewalk
In a school zone
On a highway with a speed limit greater than 50 km/h
In a park unless it is specifically designated for e-bike use
In addition, you must obey all the rules of the road that apply to cyclists, such as:
- Ride in the same direction as traffic
- Obey all traffic signs and signals
- Yield to pedestrians
- Use hand signals when turning or stopping
If you violate any of these laws, you could be subject to a fine, imprisonment, or both.
