The first car is generally considered to be the Benz Patent Motorwagen, built by Karl Benz in 1886.
It was a three-wheeled vehicle powered by a gasoline engine. While other inventors were experimenting with self-propelled vehicles around the same time, Benz's creation was the first to meet the definition of a car as we know it today.
