1. Safety First:
* Turn off all accessories: Make sure the radio, headlights, and other electrical devices in *both* cars are turned off.
* Park on a level surface: This ensures a stable connection and prevents rolling.
* Engage parking brakes: In both cars.
* Wear safety glasses: Acid from the battery can splatter.
* Gloves are recommended: To protect your hands from acid and grime.
* Ventilation: Ensure good ventilation as battery fumes are dangerous.
2. Gather your materials:
* Jumper cables: Heavy-duty jumper cables are recommended. Cheap cables can overheat.
* A working vehicle: With a charged battery.
3. Connecting the Jumper Cables:
This is crucial. Get the order wrong and you risk damaging electronics. Remember POSITIVE to POSITIVE, NEGATIVE to NEGATIVE.
* POSITIVE (+) to POSITIVE (+): Connect one end of the red jumper cable clamp to the POSITIVE (+) terminal of the dead battery (in the Pontiac Transport). Connect the other end of the red cable to the POSITIVE (+) terminal of the good battery in the other car.
* NEGATIVE (-) to NEGATIVE (-): Connect one end of the black jumper cable clamp to the NEGATIVE (-) terminal of the *good* battery. Crucially, connect the other end of the black cable to an UNPAINTED METAL SURFACE on the engine block or chassis of the Pontiac Transport, NOT directly to the negative terminal of the dead battery. Connecting to the chassis reduces the risk of sparks near the battery.
4. Starting the Pontiac Transport:
* Start the working car: Let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery.
* Attempt to start the Pontiac Transport: Turn the ignition key in the Pontiac Transport and try to start it. If it doesn't start immediately, let the working car run for a few more minutes before trying again.
5. Disconnecting the Jumper Cables:
* Turn off both cars.
* Disconnect the cables in the REVERSE order you connected them:
* Remove the black cable from the Pontiac Transport's chassis.
* Remove the black cable from the good battery's negative terminal.
* Remove the red cable from the good battery's positive terminal.
* Remove the red cable from the Pontiac Transport's positive terminal.
6. After jump-starting:
* Let the Pontiac Transport run for at least 30 minutes: This allows the alternator to recharge the battery. Driving for a while is even better.
* Have your battery tested: A weak or faulty battery may need replacing. A mechanic can test the alternator to ensure it's charging properly.
Important Note: If you're unsure about any of these steps, it's best to call a roadside assistance service or a mechanic. Incorrectly jump-starting a car can damage the electrical system.
