* Key Position and Key Condition: Make absolutely sure you're turning the key all the way to the "on" position (not just accessory). A worn or damaged key can also be the culprit. Try a spare key if you have one.
* Steering Wheel Position: Try gently jiggling the steering wheel while turning the key. Sometimes a slight turn of the wheel in either direction will release the lock. Don't force it though!
* Shift Position (Automatic Transmission): If your Neon has an automatic transmission, make sure the gear selector is in "Park" (P). The steering wheel lock is often linked to the transmission.
* Battery Voltage: A weak battery can sometimes prevent the steering wheel lock from releasing. Try checking your battery voltage. Low voltage can be indicated by dim headlights or slow cranking.
* Ignition Switch: If none of the above works, the problem could lie with the ignition switch itself. This is a more complex issue and may require professional attention. A faulty ignition switch may need to be replaced.
* Steering Column: In rare cases, there could be a mechanical problem with the steering column lock mechanism. This also warrants professional assessment.
