Attempting to check or add transmission fluid yourself is strongly discouraged. Improperly adding or removing fluid can severely damage the transmission.
To service the transmission fluid, you should do the following:
1. Take it to a qualified mechanic or transmission specialist: This is the only safe and reliable way to check and/or change the transmission fluid in a 2000 Corvette automatic. They have the proper tools and knowledge to perform the service correctly, including using a scan tool to check the transmission temperature for accurate readings.
2. Follow the manufacturer's recommended service intervals: Consult your owner's manual for the recommended fluid and filter change intervals for your specific transmission. These intervals are usually based on miles driven and/or time. Ignoring these recommendations can lead to premature transmission failure.
While some might suggest methods involving removing a fill plug, these methods are unreliable and potentially harmful. The transmission needs to be at the correct temperature for an accurate reading, and the method of using a fill plug to assess level is inaccurate at best and can lead to overfilling. Overfilling can damage the transmission just as much as underfilling.
