When cars invented?

There's no single answer to when cars were invented, as it was a gradual process of development. However, Karl Benz is generally credited with inventing the first practical automobile in 1886 with his Benz Patent-Motorwagen. While other inventors were working on self-propelled vehicles at the same time, Benz's car is considered the first to be truly commercially viable.
