Instead of siphoning, consider these much safer alternatives:
* Use a fuel transfer pump: These are relatively inexpensive and designed for safely transferring fuel. They connect to the fuel line and pump the gas into a container. This is by far the safest method.
* Have a professional do it: A mechanic or towing service can safely drain the fuel tank for you. This is a better solution, especially if you're not comfortable working with fuel.
* Drive to a gas station: If your fuel light is on but the engine still works, driving to a gas station is the safest method.
Why siphoning is dangerous with an internal pump:
* Pressure: Modern fuel systems maintain pressure, and this pressure can cause fuel to spray unexpectedly during the siphoning process.
* Fumes: Gasoline fumes are highly flammable and easily ignited by static electricity or sparks.
* Pump damage: Attempting to siphon might damage the fuel pump or other components of the fuel system.
