The 2004 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L 2WD has a transmission fluid dipstick. You'll find it on the transmission itself. It's usually a long, thin dipstick with markings for the "ADD" and "FULL" levels. Locate the transmission (it's a fairly large component in the engine bay towards the rear) and look for the dipstick sticking out of the top or side.
