- A set of jumper cables with clamps to attach the positive and negative terminals of the car batteries.
- A second vehicle with a fully charged battery.
- A clear space where both cars can park close together without touching each other.
- Ensure that both vehicles are in park and turned off.
- Open the hood of both cars and locate the battery. The positive terminal is typically marked with a plus (+) symbol, while the negative terminal is marked with a minus (-) symbol.
- Attach one end of the red (positive) jumper cable to the positive battery terminal of the dead battery. Attach the other end of the red jumper cable to the positive battery terminal of the working battery.
- Connect one end of the black (negative) jumper cable to the negative battery terminal of the working battery. Clamp the other end of the black jumper cable to an unpainted metal part of the car's frame, not near the battery.
- Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery.
- Try starting the car with the dead battery.
- If successful, leave the engine running and remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were attached.
- If unsuccessful, ensure that the jumper cables are properly attached, and try again.
- Let the disabled car run for a few minutes to charge its battery.
- Disconnect the jumper cables in reverse order.
