- Ensure the engine is cool.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Locate the distributor. It is mounted at the front of the engine, just below the carburetor.
- The points cover is held in place by two screws
- Loosen the hold-down clamp (2) just enough to turn the rotating plate assembly to align the point-opening with a flat portion of the cam, just starting to separate (0.020 inch maximum opening at this setting). Tighten the hold-down clamp.
- Loosen locking screw (1-6 point distributor: loosen both screws) and position stationary contact so opening between contacts is .016-.020 in. when rubbing block on cam is on high point of cam. Holding stationary contact firmly in position, tighten locking screw (both screws on 1-6 point distributor).
This should set the ignition point gap correctly. Be sure to double-check the gap before replacing the distributor cap and connecting the battery cables.
