MG cars were originally produced by the Morris Garages company, which was founded in 1923 by Cecil Kimber. The company produced a variety of sports cars and saloons, including the MG Midget, MG TF, and MG B. In 1952, Morris Garages was acquired by British Motor Corporation (BMC), and MG cars continued to be produced under the BMC umbrella. In 1961, BMC was merged with Austin Motor Company to form British Motor Holdings (BMH), and MG cars continued to be produced under the BMH umbrella. In 1968, BMH was merged with Leyland Motor Corporation to form British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC), and MG cars continued to be produced under the BLMC umbrella. In 1980, BLMC was nationalized and became British Leyland, and MG cars continued to be produced under the British Leyland umbrella. In 1987, British Leyland was privatized and became Rover Group, and MG cars continued to be produced under the Rover Group umbrella. In 2005, Rover Group was acquired by Nanjing Automobile Corporation, and MG cars are now produced under the SAIC Motor umbrella.
