1. Replacement Speedometer Cable
2. Wrench Set
3. Screwdriver
4. Pliers
5. Jack and Jack Stands
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle
- Park the Tercel on a flat surface and apply the parking brake.
- Engage first gear (if manual) or "PARK" (if automatic) to keep it from rolling while working.
- Place the jack stands securely under the vehicle's designated jack points.
- Loosen but don't remove the lug nuts on one of the front wheels, then raise the vehicle with the jack until the wheel is off the ground.
- Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
Step 2: Locate the Speedometer Cable
- Look under the dashboard on the driver's side to find the speedometer cable near the firewall.
- The speedometer cable connects the transmission to the speedometer gauge on the dashboard.
- It's usually secured in place by a cable clip or bracket.
Step 3: Disconnect the Speedometer Cable
- Use the screwdriver to pry open the cable clip or loosen the bracket to disconnect the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer.
- Grasp the inner cable and gently pull it out from the transmission housing.
Step 4: Remove the Old Speedometer Cable
- With the cable detached from both the transmission and the speedometer, trace its path along the firewall and undercarriage.
- You may encounter additional brackets or clips holding the cable in place; remove them as you go.
- Once the old cable is completely removed, set it aside.
Step 5: Connect the New Speedometer Cable
- Begin by running the new speedometer cable through the same route as the old one, securing it with the brackets and clips you removed earlier.
- Be sure to connect the inner cable firmly into the transmission housing.
Step 6: Reconnect the Speedometer Cable
- At the speedometer end, insert the inner cable into the gauge and reattach it to the clip or bracket.
Step 7: Reinstall the Wheel and Lower the Vehicle
- Put the wheel back on, hand-tighten the lug nuts, then lower the vehicle using the jack.
- Fully tighten the lug nuts with a wrench.
Step 8: Test the Speedometer
- Start the engine and verify that the speedometer reading is accurate.
- Take the Tercel for a short test drive to ensure that the speedometer works properly at various speeds.
