Volkswagen ID.4 launched

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the ID.4, with the SUV becoming the second model in the pure-electric ID. range to arrive.

Available with a range of up to 323 miles on a charge, the ID.4 will prove a crucial model for the German manufacturer. It’s VW’s first pure-electric SUV, and will be built on the same MEB platform as the ID.3 and similarly-sized Enyaq iV from group stablemate Skoda.

Fitted with a 77 kWh battery (net) powering a 150 kW electric motor driving the rear wheels, the ID.4 will cover more than 320 miles on a charge and complete the 0-62 mph time in 8.5 seconds.

Charging is possible at up to 125 kW from ultra-rapid CCS charge points, adding almost 200 miles of range in around 30 minutes.

Like the ID.3, VW is claiming interior cabin levels for the ID.4 are comparable with a class above. That’s because the improved packaging brought about by the electric powertrain and MEB architecture frees up a lot of interior space.

Due to go on sale in Europe later this year, the ID.4 will come along with additional battery and powertrain options in due course. A smaller 52 kWh battery will be available post-launch, as will the different motor power levels and a twin-motor set-up as well.

Prices and UK specifications will be announced closer to on-sale date.
