- Lift and safely support the vehicle.
- On all models, locate the filter that is part of the fuel pump module assembly and inside of the fuel tank.
There are two models of fuel filter/pumps on this vehicle. One filter/pump assembly was used on models without the Vortec 5300 V8 engine and the other filter/pump assembly was used on models with the Vortec 5300 V8 engine. To service the filter, the fuel pump module assembly must be removed and disassembled.
Models w/o Vortec 5300 V8 Engine
- Disconnect fuel lines.
- Remove fuel tank skid plate.
- Detach electrical connectors.
- Remove lock ring to remove fuel pump module assembly.
- Remove fuel filter.
Models w/Vortec 5300 V8 Engine
- Remove the spare tire and tire bracket from under the vehicle by removing the four bolts that hold the tire bracket to the frame.
- Then remove the six nuts and bolts that hold the skid plate to the fuel tank.
- Detach the fuel filler hose from the tank by unscrewing the cap and pulling the hose off.
- Now you can reach up into the fuel tank and unhook the fuel pump electrical connector and lift the fuel pump/filter assembly out of the tank.
