Mopeds are defined as motorized bicycles that have pedals, a maximum piston displacement of 50 cubic centimeters, and are capable of a maximum speed of 30 mph on level ground.
Driver's License Requirement:
* A Class M endorsement on your driver's license is required to operate a moped in Alaska.
* To obtain an M endorsement, you must pass a vision screening, written test, and on-cycle driving test.
* If you are under 18, you must also complete a motorcycle safety course approved by the Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) before you can apply for an M endorsement.
Other Moped Laws:
* Mopeds must be registered with the DMV and display a valid license plate.
* Mopeds must be equipped with a headlight, taillight, brake light, turn signals, and a horn.
* Mopeds must be operated in the right-hand lane of traffic and obey all traffic laws.
* The maximum speed limit for mopeds is 30 mph on public roads.
* Mopeds are not permitted on freeways or highways.
* Mopeds must not be operated under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Penalties for Violating Moped Laws:
Violating Alaska's moped laws can result in fines, jail time, and/or the suspension or revocation of your driver's license.
