Why do you charge an air conditioner or heat pump with refrigerant using the low side of system?

Refrigerant is actually _not_ charged into air conditioners and heat pumps using the low side of the system; they are charged using the high side of the system. The low-pressure side of the system is used for connecting refrigeration gauges, and if used to charge would lead to liquid refrigerant flooding the compressor, causing severe damage.
