Buy at the end of the quarter and month
The best time to buy a new car (electric or not) is at the end of the month in March, June, September or December, since that’s when automakers and dealerships are trying much harder to reach their sale goals. Tesla is an obvious example, they offer great deals at the end of the quarters.
Buy after a new model is announced
When a new model is due, automakers and dealerships are more willing to give higher discounts on older models to get them off the lot faster. This is the case of the outgoing model 2017 Nissan Leaf. In the USA there are discounts up to 10.000 USD, which make this very appealing electric car cost roughly 13.000 USD (12.119 €) in some USA States – after all the discounts and rebates are factored in.
Last but not least, use the Internet and phone to contact multiple dealers. This way you’ll know which one offers the best deal.
If we apply these tips to the electric car scenario in 2017, there is no doubt that the best deal available is the 2017 Nissan Leaf. Not only the new generation 2018 Nissan Leaf is going to be revealed in September, but also many alternatives are arriving with better range, such as the 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf, 2017 Ford Focus Electric, 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Electric or the 2018 Kia Soul EV. For all these reasons Nissan is highly discounting the 2017 Nissan Leaf.
While the most reasonable time to buy the 2017 Nissan Leaf seems to be after the 2018 model’s revelation in September, there is no certainty that many units of the outgoing model will still be available by then to justify great discounts. To sum up, if you’re a gambler and feel lucky wait until September, however if you want to play safe, June might be the best time to buy a new 2017 Nissan Leaf – before they are gone from the dealerships.
However, if the 2017 Nissan Leaf isn’t the electric car you’re looking for, December will be a great time to buy one of the alternatives:
In 2018, a new wave of electric cars with better range and more affordable will come, especially from the Kia-Hyundai Group and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. This event will put some pressure to drop the prices of the existing electric car offer – as soon as we start approaching the end of this year.
What do you think? Do you have any other tip to buy a new electric car for the best price possible?
