Smart Automobile GmbH is a German automobile manufacturer that focuses on manufacturing small city cars. Originally a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Swatch, the company is now wholly owned by Mercedes-Benz Group.
The manufacturing plant in Hambach, France, serves as the primary production hub for Smart cars. This plant has been operational since 1997, specializing in the production of Smart Fortwo and Smart Forfour models. The Hambach facility has a production capacity of approximately 150,000 vehicles per year.
While the majority of Smart cars are produced in France, the company also has production facilities in other locations. For instance, Smart cars have also been manufactured in China through a joint venture with Geely Automobile Holdings Limited. However, the Hambach plant remains the main production center for Smart cars.
