Electric vehicles to look out for this year!

For a while now we’ve been telling everyone who will listen that electric vehicles are the future…

The facts are that:

  • EV adoption is on the rise globally and more and more manufacturers are introducing new electric models to their lineup.
  • There are now over 200,000 plug-in cars and vans on UK roads.
  • And in 2018 alone 60,000 new plug-in vehicles were registered in the UK and lots of industry announcements were made.

There’s plenty to look forward to in the electric vehicle world this year…

We have put together a list (in no particular order) of just some of the exciting new EVs that have either just launched or are coming soon:

Electric vehicles to look out for this year!

Nissan Leaf 3.ZERO e+

Price: from £37,000 (A lower-priced LEAF e+ should arrive later)
Real Range: 220 miles
Availability: Expected to arrive May 2019

Available this summer the new Nissan LEAF 3.ZERO. A 62kWh battery will join the 40kWh battery version. The e+ version with improved performance, higher rapid charge speeds a larger battery pack, reported to achieve a real range of up to 220 miles to a charge. This updated EV includes driving features such as the popular e-pedal and ProPILOT driver assistance which ensures your journey is as smooth and as safe as possible. The LEAF update will also feature a new 8-inch screen for the new navigation system, NissanConnect EV and entertainment hub.

Kia Soul EV (2020)

Price: £32,000
Real Range: Range to be released early 2019
Availability: Orders start later this year

The DriveElectric team are beyond excited about the updated 2020 version of the award-winning Kia Soul EV!  This model’s new 64kWh battery will mean a much higher range, the previous 30kWh version has a ‘real-world’ range of around 120 miles, so the updated 64kWh battery could more than double this. Kia have also given the electric version of the Soul a makeover, but kept the design true to the origins of the boxy look the Soul is known for. The new version will also feature plenty of new technology and driving enhancements to further extend the battery range.

Honda Urban EV

Honda have planned to debut the prototype of this new electric car at the Geneva Motor show in March this year.  The concept design focuses on functionality and purpose, with a clean and simple futuristic look. A mass production version of the car will go on sale towards the end of 2019.

Kia e-Niro

Price: £32,000
Real Range: 240 miles
Availability: Available now for business users

The e-Niro crossover combines two of the growing trends in industry, crossover styling with electrification. It has a 64kWh battery, and is constructed on the same powertrain which is built into sister brand Hyundai’s popular new EV the Kona. This e-Niro has the ability to reach a ‘real-world’ range of up to 240 miles on a full charge. The e-Niro will come in a single high-spec, feature-rich model which has unique styling to differentiate from the Niro Hybrid and PHEV (the less powerful alternative won’t be available in the UK). The first of these models are due to arrive mid-2019.

BMW i3 120Ah

Price: From £35,000

The new version of the BMW i3 comes with an updated battery capacity of 120Ah, doubling in size from first version released in 2013 which was 60Ah. An increased real range of 145 miles gives you more freedom in your EV.  It has rapid charging capabilities of up to 50kW enabling the car to gain 80% of power in just 42 minutes. The i3 is full of cutting-edge features and up-to-date tech that the older versions are used to. The introduction of the new battery also brings new options of colour for both exterior and interior. VW I.D. Neo

In Volkswagen’s words, the Neo is “designed to turn heads”. It’s going to be packed full of technology and innovative features. This low-cost EV is definitely something worth getting excited about. VW say this new EV will be the world’s first carbon neutral production vehicle! The vehicle will come in three battery sizes 48kWh, 55kWh and a larger 62kWh version.

Tesla Model 3

Tesla’s newest and most affordable vehicle yet, the Model 3 is a smaller, simpler, more affordable electric car. Yet it does not compromise on range of performance, it’s the EV many have been waiting for.  The Model 3 was also designed to be the safest car in it’s class. Timelines are fluid for UK deliveries but we are hopeful that some will be seen on UK shores later this year.

Mercedes-Benz EQC

Price: TBC
Real Range: expected to be around 220 miles

In just a few months the first of the all-electric Mercedes EQ family is due to hit the roads, the EQC. The design of the ultra modern SUV cross-over is based on the GLC. EQC400 4MATIC features all wheel drive powered by 2 electric motors which will run from a 80kWh lithium battery pack. No real range figures have been given for this EV yet however Mercedes claim that the vehicle is capable of around 280miles WLTP.

DS 3 Crossback E-Tense

DS Automobiles is launching an evolution of the ever popular DS 3. The E-Tense will be technology-rich and loaded with plenty of gadgets and modern features. Their first fully electric vehicle will run on a 50kWh battery and is expected to deliver a ‘real-world’ range of up to 180 miles. Available to order in the UK mid 2019.

MINI Electric

Mini are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year and they will also introduce their first production pure electric vehicle. The electric version of their hugely popular hatchback is said to make a debut at the end of 2019. There hasn’t been much more information released about the electric version yet, apart from teaser concept images and some spy images of the upcoming car in testing. We will be sure to keep you updated when we know more, in the meantime there is a plug-in hybrid version of the mini available.
