- Spark Plug Socket or Socket Set
- Gapping Tool (optional)
- Spark Plugs (new)
- Torque Wrench
- Gloves
Instructions
1. Locate the Spark Plugs
- On your 1998 Honda CBR RR, the spark plugs are located on the top of the cylinder head, just below the fuel injectors.
2. Remove the Fuel Tank
- To access the spark plugs, you will need to remove the fuel tank. Pull up on the front of the tank and lift it off the bike.
3. Remove the Airbox
- Disconnect the air intake hose from the airbox and remove the airbox.
4. Remove the Ignition Coil
- Disconnect the spark plug wire from the ignition coil. Remove the bolt holding the ignition coil in place and remove the ignition coil.
5. Remove the Spark Plug
- Use a spark plug socket or a socket set to remove the spark plug.
6. Check the Spark Plug
- Inspect the old spark plug for signs of wear or damage. If the electrodes are worn or pitted, or the porcelain insulator is cracked, the spark plug should be replaced.
7. Set the Spark Plug Gap
- If you are replacing the spark plugs with NGK spark plugs, the spark plug gap should be pre-set. If you are using another brand of spark plug, you will need to set the gap according to the manufacturer's specifications.
8. Install the Spark Plug
- Thread the new spark plug into the cylinder head by hand. Be careful not to cross-thread the spark plug.
9. Tighten the Spark Plug
- Use a spark plug socket or a socket set to tighten the spark plug. Torque the spark plug to the manufacturer's specifications (typically 14-20 ft-lbs).
10. Reinstall the Ignition Coil
- Reinstall the ignition coil and bolt. Connect the spark plug wire.
11. Reinstall the Airbox
- Reinstall the airbox and connect the air intake hose.
12. Reinstall the Fuel Tank
- Reinstall the fuel tank.
13. Start the Bike
- Start the bike and check for any leaks or problems.
Tips
- When removing and installing spark plugs, be careful not to use excessive force.
- If you are not comfortable working on your motorcycle, you can have a qualified mechanic perform these steps.
