1. Open the hood of your Volvo S40. Ensure the vehicle is in a safe, level location with the parking brake engaged before you begin.
2. Locate the battery: It is usually in a plastic casing in the engine bay near the front of the car.
3. Disconnect the negative terminal: First, disconnect the negative (black) terminal by loosening the nut on the terminal with a wrench and removing the cable from the terminal.
4. Disconnect the positive terminal: Next, disconnect the positive (red) terminal by loosening the nut on the terminal with a wrench and removing the cable from the terminal.
5. Remove the battery hold-down clamp: Locate the battery hold-down clamp and remove it by unscrewing the nuts or bolts holding it in place.
6. Lift the battery out of the car: carefully lift the battery out of the compartment.
