1. Park your vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.
2. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. On the Volvo 940, the transmission fluid dipstick is located on the driver's side of the engine compartment, near the firewall. It is a yellow-handled dipstick with a black plastic cap.
3. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.
4. Reinsert the dipstick into the transmission fluid filler tube until it is fully seated.
5. Pull out the dipstick again and check the fluid level. The fluid should be between the "FULL" and "ADD" marks on the dipstick.
6. If the fluid level is low, add transmission fluid through the filler tube using a funnel. Use only Volvo-approved transmission fluid.
7. Reinsert the dipstick and check the fluid level again. Make sure the fluid level is between the "FULL" and "ADD" marks on the dipstick.
8. Replace the dipstick cap and lower the hood of your vehicle.
Note: If the transmission fluid is very low, you may need to add more than one quart of fluid. Be sure to check the fluid level after each addition to avoid overfilling the transmission.
