Parts needed:
- New spark plugs (4)
- Spark plug wrench
- Socket wrench
- Extension bar
- Gapping tool (if necessary)
Note: Before you begin, make sure the engine is cool to avoid burning yourself.
1. Remove the spark plug wires:
- Grasp the spark plug wire by its boot and gently pull it straight up to remove it from the spark plug.
- Repeat this step for the remaining three spark plug wires.
2. Remove the old spark plugs:
- Use the spark plug wrench or a socket wrench with an extension bar to loosen and remove the old spark plugs.
- Be careful not to drop the old spark plugs into the engine.
3. Check the new spark plugs:
- Inspect the new spark plugs to ensure they are the correct type and size for your Subaru GL.
- Check the electrode gap and adjust it if necessary using a gapping tool. The recommended gap is usually specified in your owner's manual.
4. Install the new spark plugs:
- Thread the new spark plugs into the engine by hand until they are finger-tight.
- Use the spark plug wrench or socket wrench to tighten the spark plugs until they are snug.
- Do not over-tighten the spark plugs as this can damage the threads.
5. Reattach the spark plug wires:
- Attach the spark plug wires to the new spark plugs by firmly pushing them down onto the spark plugs.
- Make sure the wires are seated securely.
6. Verify the new spark plugs are working:
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations.
- If the engine is running smoothly, the spark plugs are correctly installed.
Pro Tip: It's a good idea to replace all the spark plugs at the same time to ensure consistent performance.
