- A 4-pin flat trailer connector (also known as a "flat four" connector)
- A length of 14-gauge stranded wire (in the color of your choice)
- A pair of crimp connectors (male and female) for each wire
- A wire stripper/cutter
- A crimping tool
Once you have gathered your materials, follow these steps:
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal of your VW Beetle. This will help to prevent any electrical accidents while you are working on the tail lights.
2. Locate the tail light assemblies. The tail light assemblies are located on the back of the vehicle, on either side of the license plate.
3. Remove the tail light assemblies. To remove the tail light assemblies, you will need to use a screwdriver to pry open the plastic covers that hold them in place. Once the covers are removed, you can remove the tail light assemblies by pulling them straight out of the vehicle.
4. Identify the wires that you need to connect. There are three wires that you need to connect: the ground wire, the turn signal wire, and the brake light wire. The ground wire is the black wire. The turn signal wire is the green wire. The brake light wire is the red wire.
5. Connect the wires. Use the crimp connectors to connect the wires from the trailer connector to the wires from the tail light assemblies. Make sure that the ground wire is connected to the ground wire, the turn signal wire is connected to the turn signal wire, and the brake light wire is connected to the brake light wire.
6. Test the lights. Once you have connected the wires, you can test the lights to make sure that they work properly. To do this, turn on the ignition key and press the brake pedal. The brake lights should come on. Turn on the turn signals and the turn signal lights should come on.
7. Reinstall the tail light assemblies. Once you have tested the lights and made sure that they work properly, you can reinstall the tail light assemblies. To do this, simply insert them back into the vehicle and snap the plastic covers back into place.
8. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Once the tail light assemblies are reinstalled, you can reconnect the negative battery terminal.
By following these steps, you can easily wire your 2002 VW Beetle tail lights for towing.
