Can you have a legal drivers license in multiple states?

In the United States, it is not permitted to hold several valid driver's licenses from many states at the same time. Each state has its own laws and procedures for issuing driver's licenses, thus obtaining a driver's license in numerous states concurrently would be illegal. To retain a legitimate driver's license in their current state of residency, a person generally needs to surrender any prior licenses from other states.
