Why does my fuel gauge in the 1985 Toyota pickup read half when tank is full?

Possible causes:

* Faulty fuel level sensor: The fuel level sensor is responsible for sending the fuel level information to the fuel gauge. If the sensor is faulty, it may be sending incorrect information to the gauge, causing it to read half when the tank is full.

* Wiring issues: There may be a problem with the wiring between the fuel level sensor and the fuel gauge. If the wiring is loose or damaged, it can cause the gauge to read incorrectly.

* Fuel pump issues: A faulty fuel pump can also affect the fuel gauge reading. If the fuel pump is not working properly, it may not be able to provide enough pressure to the fuel level sensor, causing it to read incorrectly.

To troubleshoot:

1. Check the fuel level sensor: Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel level sensor and measure the resistance between the sensor terminal and ground. The resistance should be between 0 and 90 ohms when the tank is full and between 240 and 330 ohms when the tank is empty.

2. Inspect the wiring: Inspect the wiring between the fuel level sensor and the fuel gauge for any loose or damaged connections. Make sure the wires are properly connected and there are no breaks or kinks in the wiring.

3. Check the fuel pump: Verify that the fuel pump is working properly by checking for fuel pressure at the fuel rail. The fuel pressure should be between 40 and 60 psi.

If any of these components are found to be faulty, they will need to be replaced in order to correct the fuel gauge reading.
