Tools and materials needed:
- Replacement positive and negative battery cables
- 10mm wrench
- 13mm wrench
- Cable cutters
- Wire strippers
- Crimping tool
- Heat shrink tubing
- Pliers
- Safety glasses
Instructions:
1. Make sure the vehicle is turned off and the parking brake is engaged.
2. Open the hood of the vehicle.
3. Identify the positive and negative battery terminals and be careful not to touch the terminals with any metal objects to prevent sparks or electric shock.
4. Start by disconnecting the negative terminal by using the 13mm wrench. Place the wrench on the negative terminal nut, turn counterclockwise, and then remove the terminal from the battery post.
5. Disconnect the positive battery cable by using the 10mm wrench.
6. Using the cable cutters, cut off the old battery cables near the battery terminals.
7. Strip the insulation from the ends of the replacement battery cables to create about a half inch of bare wire.
8. Crimp the positive and negative terminals on the new battery cables.
9. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery post and tighten the nut with the 13mm wrench.
10. Connect the positive battery terminal to the battery post and tighten the nut with the 10mm wrench.
11. Inspect the cable connections to ensure they are tight and secure.
12. Close the hood of the vehicle.
13. Start the vehicle to check that the battery is charging properly.
Tips:
- If the battery terminals are corroded, clean them with a wire brush and baking soda before installing the new battery cables.
- When connecting the new battery cables, be sure to connect the positive cable first and then the negative cable.
- If you are not comfortable working on electrical components, seek professional help.
