- Spark plug socket (typically 5/8")
- Spark plug wrench
- Gapping tool (if necessary)
- New spark plugs (check owner's manual for recommended type)
Instructions
1. Open the hood of your Colorado and locate the spark plugs. They are located on the top of the engine, near the front.
2. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. To do this, simply pull the connectors straight up.
3. Use the spark plug wrench to loosen the spark plugs. Be careful not to drop the spark plugs into the engine!
4. Remove the spark plugs from the engine.
5. Check the gap on the new spark plugs. The gap should be specified in your owner's manual. If necessary, use the gapping tool to adjust the gap.
6. Screw the new spark plugs into the engine. Hand-tighten the spark plugs until they are snug, then use the spark plug wrench to tighten them further.
7. Reconnect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs.
8. Close the hood of your Colorado.
Tips
- It is a good idea to change your spark plugs every 30,000 miles or so, or according to the manufacturer's recommendation.
- If you are not comfortable changing your spark plugs yourself, you can have them changed at a mechanic's shop.
- Be careful not to drop the spark plugs into the engine! If you do, you may need to remove the valve cover to retrieve them.
