Tools and Materials Needed:
- Replacement fuel pump module (matches your vehicle)
- 5/16-inch socket wrench
- Screwdriver
- Rags
- Safety goggles
- Gloves
- Jack and jack stands (if needed)
Instructions:
1. Safety First:
- Before starting, ensure the vehicle is parked on a level, stable surface. Engage the parking brake and ensure the engine is off and cool.
- Disconnect the battery's negative terminal to prevent electrical accidents.
2. Locate the Fuel Tank:
- The fuel pump is usually located inside the fuel tank, but its location may vary slightly based on your model. Usually, there's an access panel or port near the rear of the vehicle under the trunk or cargo area.
3. Remove the Fuel Tank Access Panel:
- Use your screwdriver to remove any screws holding the fuel tank access panel. Depending on your vehicle's design, there may be a rubber seal. Carefully lift the panel off the vehicle.
4. Disconnect the Fuel Lines:
- You may encounter two fuel lines: the feed line and the return line. They are usually marked to differentiate them.
- Carefully remove the fuel lines by loosening the corresponding clamps with your wrench. Use a rag to catch any spilled fuel.
5. Remove the Fuel Pump Assembly:
- With the fuel lines disconnected, you should see a cylindrical fuel pump assembly unit.
- There might be a retaining ring or plastic lock ring that secures it. Carefully unclip the ring using your fingers or a screwdriver (depending on the type).
- Lift the fuel pump assembly out of the tank.
6. Replacing the Fuel Pump:
- Compare the new fuel pump with the old one to ensure they match in shape and connections.
- Remove the old pump from its housing by pressing down on the tab or squeezing the retaining clips, depending on the pump's design.
- Insert the new fuel pump into the housing and secure it by reconnecting the clips or tabs.
7. Reinstall the Fuel Pump Assembly:
- Place the fuel pump assembly back into the fuel tank.
- Reinstall the retaining ring or lock ring.
8. Reconnect the Fuel Lines:
- Ensure the feed line goes to the "inlet" or "feed" port, and the return line connects to the "outlet" or "return" port.
- Tighten the hose clamps to secure the connections.
9. Reinstall the Fuel Tank Access Panel:
- Replace the fuel tank access panel and secure it with the removed screws.
10. Reconnect the Battery:
- Reattach the previously disconnected negative terminal of the battery.
11. Test the Fuel Pump:
- Turn the ignition key to the "On" position without starting the engine. Listen for the fuel pump. It should make a humming sound.
- If you hear the pump running, start the engine and check for any leaks or abnormalities.
