1. Disconnect the vacuum advance hose from the distributor.
2. Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature.
3. Connect the timing light to the battery and the spark plug wire for cylinder number one.
4. Aim the timing light at the timing marks on the engine.
5. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and turn the distributor until the timing mark aligns with the pointer.
6. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
7. Reconnect the vacuum advance hose.
8. Check the timing at idle and at 2,500 RPM. It should be set to 6 degrees before top dead center (BTDC) at idle and 36 degrees BTDC at 2,500 RPM.
