- Low refrigerant level: If there is not enough refrigerant in the air conditioning system, it will not be able to cool the air properly. Have your refrigerant level checked and refilled if necessary.
- Compressor problem: The compressor is the heart of the air conditioning system, and if it is not working properly, the air conditioner will not be able to function. If the compressor has failed or seized up then the light will come on but the conditoner will not be able to blow cool air.
- Electrical problem: An electrical issue could be preventing the air conditioner from receiving power. Check the fuses and relays for the air conditioning system and replace any that are blown or damaged.
- Loose or broken hoses or belts: If the air conditioning system has hoses or belts that are loose or broken, it could prevent the system from functioning properly. Check all of the hoses and belts and tighten or replace any that are damaged.
- Expansion valve issue: The expansion valve is a key part in regulating cooling power of the A/C system and allowing the refrigerant to flow and expand. A valve that stuck opened or even stuck closed can result in the system over cooling or not cooling at all. This can also effect if the light comes on or not for the air conditioner.
- Cabin Air filter: Many times customers just assume the air conditioner isnt working if they just notice the air isnt as cool as it once was. In most vehicles the cabin air filter is part of the A/C system and can often be found either behind the glove compartment or under the dashboard on the passenger side. This filter works to keep dust, dirt and other pollutants from entering your vehicle and can reduce airflow causing the A/C to perform poorly.
If you have checked all of these items and the air conditioner is still not working, you may need to take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic to diagnose the problem and have it repaired.
