1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor advance. This will prevent the timing from being affected by vacuum.
2. Ensure the engine is at operating temperature.
3. Connect a timing light to the battery (positive terminal) and to the timing mark on the engine.
4. Crank the engine until the timing mark aligns with the TDC (Top Dead Center) mark on the engine timing cover.
5. Adjust the distributor by loosening the hold-down bolt or clamp and rotating it clockwise or counterclockwise until the timing mark is aligned with the TDC mark when viewed with the timing light.
6. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt or clamp.
7. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the distributor advance.
8. Verify the timing by rechecking with the timing light.
- If you cannot align the timing mark on the engine timing cover, check to make sure you are on the correct piston (number one). Ensure your vehicle is in “TDC compression stroke.”
- If you cannot locate the timing marks on your vehicle, you can find your vehicle’s specific instructions in the vehicle’s service manual.
