How do you change the heater core in a 1996 Toyota Tercel?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Replacement Heater Core

- Phillips Head Screwdriver

- Drain Pan

- New coolant (50/50 mixture)

- Funnel

Instructions:

1. Park the vehicle in a safe, well-lit area. Make sure the engine is cool to the touch before beginning.

2. Drain the coolant system. Place a drain pan under the radiator and remove the radiator cap. Open the petcock on the radiator to drain the coolant.

3. Remove the heater core cover. The cover is located under the dash on the passenger side footwell area. Remove the screws holding the cover in place and set it aside.

4. Disconnect the heater core hoses. There are two hoses connected to the heater core. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps and remove the hoses.

5. Remove the old heater core. The heater core is held in place by four bolts. Remove the bolts and take out the old heater core.

6. Install the new heater core. Place the new heater core into place. Note that the heater core has a specific orientation, the inlet and outlet ports should be facing down and the tubes at the top. Insert the bolts and hand tighten them.

7. Reattach the heater core hoses. Slide the hose clamps over the heater core nipples and tighten them down until they’re secure.

8. Replace the heater core cover. Replace the heater core cover and secure it with the screws you removed earlier.

9. Refill the coolant system. Fill the radiator with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water until it reaches the full mark on the radiator reservoir, Use the funnel to prevent spills.

10. Start the engine Start the vehicle and check for leaks. If you find any leaks, make sure to tighten the affected hose or fittings.

11. Test the heater. Once you verify there are no leaks, turn the climate control to “Heat” and check if warm air is coming out from the vents.

Tips:

- It's a good idea to replace the coolant hoses and thermostat when replacing the heater core, especially if they are old or worn.

- Be sure to dispose of the old coolant following environmental regulations in your area.
