2. Remove the distributor cap. The distributor cap is held in place by two or three nuts or bolts. Remove these nuts or bolts and lift the distributor cap off of the distributor.
3. Identify the number one spark plug wire. The number one spark plug wire is usually the longest wire on the distributor cap. It may also be marked with a number "1" or "one"
4. Trace the number one spark plug wire to the spark plug. Follow the number one spark plug wire from the distributor cap to the spark plug. The spark plug is located at the top of the cylinder head.
5. Replace the distributor cap. Once you have identified the number one spark plug wire, you can replace the distributor cap. Make sure that the spark plug wires are seated properly in the distributor cap before you start the engine.
