1. Park the vehicle in a safe, well-lit area.
2. Turn off the engine and allow the vehicle to cool down.
3. Open the hood of the vehicle.
4. Locate the battery. It is usually located on the driver's side of the engine compartment, near the front of the vehicle.
5. Disconnect the negative terminal cable from the battery. Use a wrench to loosen the bolt that holds the cable in place, and then pull the cable off of the terminal.
6. Disconnect the positive terminal cable from the battery. Use a wrench to loosen the bolt that holds the cable in place, and then pull the cable off of the terminal.
7. Remove the hold-down clamp that secures the battery in place. Use a wrench to loosen the bolts that hold the clamp in place, and then remove the clamp.
8. Lift the battery out of the vehicle. Be careful not to drop the battery, as it is heavy.
9. Place the battery in a safe place, away from children and pets.
10. Dispose of the battery properly. Most auto parts stores offer battery recycling services.
Here are some additional tips for removing the battery from a 2003 Chevy Silverado:
- Ensure the gears are in Park (or neutral) and that the parking brake is engaged.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from sparks and corrosive battery acid.
- Be careful not to drop the battery, as it can be heavy (and contains corrosive acid).
