Tools and Materials Needed:
- Spark plug socket wrench
- Spark plug gap gauge
- 5/8-inch spark plug wrench
- Wire brush
- Dielectric grease
- New spark plugs (x3)
- Extension bar
Instructions:
1. Disconnect the Negative Battery Terminal:
- Locate the negative (-) battery terminal on the battery.
- Use a wrench to loosen the nut or bolt securing the negative battery cable.
- Remove the cable from the terminal and make sure it doesn't come into contact with any metal surfaces. This step is crucial for safety, as it will help prevent any accidental electrical shocks while working on the spark plugs.
2. Remove the Ignition Coil Covers:
- Locate the ignition coil covers at the rear of the engine, above the spark plugs.
- There are three ignition coil covers that need to be removed. Each cover is secured by two 10 mm bolts.
- Use a 10 mm socket wrench to remove the bolts and lift off the ignition coil covers.
3. Remove the Old Spark Plugs:
- Use the spark plug socket wrench to loosen and remove the old spark plugs one by one. Be careful not to drop any debris into the spark plug holes.
4. Inspect the Old Spark Plugs:
- Check the condition of the old spark plugs by inspecting the electrodes for signs of wear, erosion, or deposits.
- Replace any spark plug with worn or damaged electrodes with a new one.
5. Check the Spark Plug Gap:
- Use the spark plug gap gauge to check the gap between the center electrode and the side electrode of the new spark plugs.
- The proper spark plug gap for your vehicle can be found in your owner's manual. Adjust the gap if necessary by carefully bending the side electrode.
6. Apply Dielectric Grease:
- Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the threads of the new spark plugs to prevent them from seizing.
7. Install the New Spark Plugs:
- Screw in the new spark plugs by hand until they are snug. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the threads.
8. Re-install the Ignition Coil Covers:
- Reposition the ignition coil covers and secure them with the 10 mm bolts.
9. Re-connect the Negative Battery Terminal:
- Re-connect the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal. Tighten the nut or bolt securely.
Start your vehicle and check for any unusual sounds or behavior. If everything seems normal, you have successfully replaced the back 3 spark plugs on your 2004 Dodge Caravan 3.3 L.
