4. Neutralize the battery acid. If any battery acid has spilled onto the battery tray or surrounding areas, neutralize it with a baking soda and water solution.
5. Reinstall the battery terminals. Once the terminals and posts are clean, reconnect the battery terminals and tighten the nuts or bolts.
6. Protect the terminals. To prevent future corrosion, apply a layer of petroleum jelly or a terminal protector to the battery terminals and posts.
