The starter motor on a Hyundai Matrix is located on the driver’s side of the engine, near the bottom. It is attached to the engine block by two bolts.
To remove the starter motor, you will need the following tools:
- Socket wrench
- Ratchet
- Extension bar
- 10mm socket
- 12mm socket
- 17mm socket
Instructions
1. Disconnect the battery. This is important to prevent any electrical shock while working on the starter motor.
2. Remove the air filter housing. This will give you more room to work.
3. Locate the starter motor. It is on the driver’s side of the engine, near the bottom. It is attached to the engine block by two bolts.
4. Disconnect the wiring from the starter motor. There are two wires: a positive wire and a negative wire. Use a 10mm socket to loosen the nuts on the wires.
5. Remove the bolts holding the starter motor to the engine block. Use a 12mm socket for these bolts.
6. Remove the starter motor. You may have to use a pry bar to help you pry it off the engine block.
7. Inspect the starter motor. If the brushes are worn out, you may be able to replace them. If not, you will need to replace the entire starter motor.
8. To reinstall the starter motor, simply reverse the steps above.
Tips
* Be careful not to drop the starter motor. It is heavy and could cause injury if it falls on your foot.
* If you are having difficulty removing the bolts, use a penetrating oil to loosen them.
* If you are still having difficulty, you may want to take your car to a mechanic for assistance.
