This is named after Nikolaus Otto, a German engineer who is credited with developing the first successful four-stroke internal combustion engine.
While "Otto cycle" is the most common name, it's also sometimes referred to as the "four-stroke cycle" or "spark-ignition cycle" because of the method used to ignite the fuel-air mixture.
