Is a camshaft the same thing as crankshaft?

No, a camshaft and a crankshaft are not the same thing. While both are crucial rotating shafts in an internal combustion engine, they have very different functions:

* Crankshaft: Converts the reciprocating (back-and-forth) motion of the pistons into rotational motion, which ultimately turns the wheels of the vehicle.

* Camshaft: Controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves in the engine's cylinders. It uses lobes on its surface to push on valve lifters or rockers, which in turn operate the valves at precisely timed intervals.

In short, the crankshaft provides power, while the camshaft controls the timing of the power strokes.
