The oil light comes on for several reasons:
* Low Oil Level: This is the most common cause. Check your oil level using the dipstick. If it's low, add the correct type and amount of oil (check your owner's manual). *Do not overfill.*
* Low Oil Pressure: This is more serious. Low oil pressure indicates a problem with the oil pump, a leak in the system, or severely worn engine components. Adding oil might temporarily quiet the light, but the underlying problem needs immediate professional attention.
* Faulty Oil Pressure Sensor: The sensor itself could be malfunctioning, giving a false low-oil pressure reading. A mechanic can test the sensor.
* Other Electrical Issues: Less common, but a problem with the oil light circuit itself (wiring, etc.) could cause it to illuminate falsely.
What to do:
1. Check your oil level immediately. This is the first and most important step. Park on a level surface, let the engine cool slightly, and check the dipstick.
2. If the oil is low, add the correct type and amount of oil. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct oil type and capacity. Do not overfill.
3. If the oil level is fine or adding oil doesn't turn off the light, do NOT drive the vehicle. This indicates a more serious problem, such as low oil pressure, a faulty sensor, or other mechanical issues that require professional diagnosis and repair. Driving with low oil pressure will severely damage your engine.
4. Have the vehicle towed or taken to a qualified mechanic for diagnosis and repair. They will use diagnostic tools to pinpoint the cause of the problem.
Ignoring the oil light is extremely risky and can lead to costly engine damage. Get it checked out immediately.
